Linen history

From seed to textile, linen has a fascinating story and a history much longer than you can imagine. It is a premium material, found in luxury hotels, unique fashion collections and fine dining restaurants.

7000 years ago, linen was a luxury material in Egypt and Mesopotamia, so precious as it was used for currency. No wonder that the most ancient piece of garment found in our human history was made out of linen and dates from 5 millennia ago.

About the fibers

Linen is a one of a kind plant. It prefers colder areas, that is why the biggest plantations in Europe are in France and Belgium. Extracting its fibers is a delicate process and needs a technology that sorts them and selects them with care. Its sewing is also an art. Even though the final fiber is 30% more resistant than cotton, in this processing stage it is very fragile and needs a production rhythm that is paced and an advanced sewing technology.

Once sewn, linen is on of the more resistant materials made out of natural fibers and it holds its quality on a long term:

  • Keeps a constant body temperature, crisp on summer days and warm during winter
  • Has antibacterial properties as it dries faster, does not allow bacteria to form or adhere
  • As it is so resistant, it is a long term investment – keeps its qualities for tens of years

About the fibers

Needs 3 times less water than cotton and grows in only 90 days. Moreover, it does not use pesticides, fungicides and other protective substances. It can grow in any soil and thus, it takes care of nature and of the earth.
